black mirror season 5 was released on Netflix two years ago with a smaller series of episodes than usual. Many have been waiting for information about whether or not a season 6 will take place on Netflix during that period. Unfortunately, it remains the case that the series is freezing due to drama behind the scenes.
Before we get into why Black Mirror season 6 is on ice, let’s keep you in the loop. Netflix’s anthology series is still best-in-class despite multiple platforms piling up on the anthology format, such as the reboot of CBS All Access. the twilight zone and Hulu’s attempt with Into the dark. The series created by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones are still among the best TV series on Netflix right now.
Reviews for the fifth season faltered somewhat. Whether that’s because of the lower number of episodes or the nature of some of the content in the episodes. The third episode, in which Miley Cyrus plays a pop star, currently has the lowest rating of all previous ones black mirror episodes.
Of course, the show originally started as a Channel 4 show before Netflix picked it up exclusively for season 3. This is important to explore why the show is on ice in a second.
Has Black Mirror been renewed for season 6?
Official Renewal Status: Not Renewed Yet (Last Updated: 07/31/2020)
The future of the series is currently on ice due to disputes with the IP owner. Add to that the fact that Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker have both left the Endemol Shine Group to start their own new businesses (with the financial backing of Netflix and an overall output deal with Netflix).
The news came in January 2020 that Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones have departed from Endemol Shine Group, the production house behind the show and eventual rights holders.
In July 2020, Netflix signed a “landmark deal” with Brooker and Jones taking a majority stake in the new company called Broke and Bones.
But when it comes to black mirror, the license will still stay with the old company and could stay there if Endemol and Netflix don’t come to an agreement. Deadline state:
“Three sources said Netflix and Endemol Shine have been in talks about transferring the brand, but an agreement is still a long way off. In the meantime, there’s nothing stopping Brooker and Jones from bringing their signature style to other dystopian dramas, but they just won’t be labeled as black mirror.”
So the good news is that Jones and Brooker will be working with Netflix in the future, but black mirror remains on ice because of failed negotiations or the reluctance of both sides to give in to the other’s demands.
It is also worth noting that Endemol Shine Group was fully acquired by their new owners Banijay Group in July 2020.
The creators were optimistic about the future of the show shortly after season 5 was released on Netflix, shortly after season 5 was released. Charlie Brooker told Yahoo, “Maybe we should cast someone like Barack Obama, he’d be good.”
The future of the show seems to be related to the creator’s ability to create new stories. Brooker said, “I imagine if we run out of ideas, we’ll stop.”
In 2021 we were told that black mirror may return, or at least one of the episodes will be. We’ve seen production mentions (as have other outlets) that Netflix is actively developing a sequel to USS Callister that came in Episode 1 of Season 4.
further than black mirror, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones produced Death to 2020 for Netflix, which was released in late December 2020.
Will there be another interactive Black Mirror episode?
In the interview with Yahoo, they talked about any future interactive episodes that could be on the table. They specifically said, “The point is, if you’re doing an interactive episode, it has to justify itself. There has to be a compelling, narrative reason why you’re using that differently, it’s just a gimmick.”
We do know that there are no plans for a sequel to one of the most beloved episodes, San Junipero and Brooker saying he wants to keep the two happy in their new home. As early as October 2016, however, it was said that ideas had been thrown around for a sequel to White Bear and Be Right Back, two of the earlier episodes.
Notably, as part of the new agreement noted above, Broke and Bones have engaged the talents of Russell McLean who will “focus on creating interactive projects” going forward.
