As the streaming wars heat up, grabbing great talent is a must for any streamer’s upcoming film franchise. So another big entry in the growing list of Netflix movies will be Rebel Ridge, created by Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room) and earlier with John Boyega (Star Wars). However, production came to a halt in June 2021 after Boyega left the project for family reasons.
Saulnier, who will write and direct the film, is best known for his work on Green Room starring the late Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots. And more recently he directed he Hold the dark for Netflix, starring Jeffrey Wright and Alexander Skarsgard. The director of photography for Rebel Ridge was chosen as Magnus Nordenhof Jonck, who collaborated on the OA, Secure and Hold the darknessister.
Rebel Ridge is produced by Filmscience (Blue ruin, hold the dark green room) and Bonneville Pictures (The swimming pool). Macon Blair (Room 104, Blue Ruin) will serve as executive producer, as will Louise Lovegrove (The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then Bigfoot). Matt Levin (Hold on to the darkness, apostle) will be responsible for the production.
Rebel Ridge was first announced in November 2019 and here’s the latest on everything we know about it.
What is the plot of? Rebel Ridge?
Netflix’s Rebel Ridge is described as a fast-paced thriller with blood-curdling action scenes, suspense and dark humor. The plot concerns the character of John Boyega, an ex-Marine who takes on a group of corrupt cops. The film also addresses systemic American injustices, particularly systemic racism.
Who has been poured in? Rebel Ridge?
Star Wars’ sequel trilogy star John Boyega was to lead the cast of Rebel Ridge. Boyega is just fresh off his other upcoming Netflix movie, a sci-fi action flick They cloned Tyrone which was packed in January 2021. Boyega will be joined by Golden Globe winner Don Johnson (Miami Vice, Django Unchained), Oscar nominee James Cromwell (The Green Mile, the General’s Daughter), James Badge Dale (The Departed Iron Man 3), Zsane Jhec (Black Lightning, Guardians), and Erin Doherty (The crown). Their roles are currently unknown.
In June 2021 it was announced that: John Boyega was no longer part of the cast as he left the project midway through shooting due to family reasons. Netflix was reportedly looking for his replacement.
What is the production status of? Rebel Ridge?
After a long development process and covid-related delays, Netflix’s Rebel Ridge will finally go into production in New Orleans and Los Angeles on April 5, 2021. Shooting is expected to last until May 29, 2021, provided there are no further issues caused by COVID-19.
A casting call was released last year (before the project was delayed) that could reveal some of the types of characters they are looking for.
In January, Boyega said he would have to train for production.

On June 3, 2021, Netflix announced that Boyega had to end the project for family reasons. It had already been filmed, so every scene Boyega shot must now be re-shot. As a result, production is halted.
“Rebel Ridge” pauses temporarily as we want to recast John Boyega, who had to leave the project for family reasons. We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production. We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions alongside our upcoming movie They cloned Tyrone in which he also shines.”
According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, Boyega stopped production without telling anyone and the alleged reasons were related to the script and its accommodations. THR also suggests that even Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos tried to persuade Boyega to come back. However, his agent defended his client in a statement:
“I can categorically say that these rumors are completely untrue. People will form their opinion which often stems from boredom. Unfortunately, as mentioned, John left for family reasons, which in reality is no one’s business but his own. John and Netflix have a great relationship that will continue to grow for years to come, whether through his acting or because of [Boyega’s production company] Upstairs room.”
When will Rebel Ridge be released on Netflix?
Given the difficulties facing production, it’s unlikely the film will be close to completion in 2021, but a late 2022 date may be possible.
