In an effort to expand its already vast collection for young adults, Netflix has given the go-ahead for a loose reinterpretation of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1951 classic Strangers on the train starring Riverdale‘s Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke from Strange things fame.
Netflix’s Strangers was created and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, which is fresh off her directorial debut someone great, also for Netflix. The script for the film was written by Robinson and Celeste Ballard, whose credits are the highly anticipated Space Jam sequel, demolished, Sweet/Vicious and more.
Robinson is producing the picture with Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story under their general deal with Netflix. Here’s Everything Else We Know About Netflix’s strangers:

Netflix’s strangers is described as an undermined Hitchock-ian dark comedy. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train,” the students at Rosewood Country Day School lead a difficult life. When two students decide to destroy another, the collateral damage doesn’t end. The dark comedy follows unlikely cohorts Drew (an alpha, “It” girl) and Eleanor (beta, alt girl) who agree to go after each other’s bullies.

Deadline has confirmed that: Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke would direct Netflix’ Strangers. Mendes is best known for her performance in Riverdale, while Hawke rose to prominence in the third season of Netflix Strange things. Other cast members include: Rish Shah (Emmerdale, Mrs. Marvel), Talia Ryder (Never Seldom Sometimes Always), Jonathan Daviss (outer banks) and Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why, Teen Wolf).
In her interview with PureWow, Mendes shared her enthusiasm for the project:
“I have a project that I’m super excited about called Strangers, which is being directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who has already become a very good friend of mine. I am very excited to get started on that.”
It was also later reported that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner would also appear in the film:

What is the production status of? strangers?
Netflix’s strangers was set to go into production in Atlanta summer of 2021, according to issue 1247 of Production Weekly. On June 9, Mendes posted to her Instagram that she began taking tennis lessons for her role in strangers. Later, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson shared a few photos from the filming to signal that production has finally started:
Likely Story is the production company behind the new adaptation. They have previously worked with Netflix on a number of projects, including: Heard and seen things and I’m thinking of ending things.

Given the production schedule, we can expect Strangers to hit Netflix sometime in the second half of 2022.
